Analysis: Who do you Think you are - Jeremy Clarkson episode

The structure of the show has been used to show the journey that Jeremy Clarkson will undertake. The beginning of the show presents to the audience Jeremy Clarkson family tree diagram, suggesting a start of the journey. Clarkson himself even calls it “a roadmap” – indicating his automotive background and highlighting the future journey that will occur. This family tree is still fairly foreign to him. This is contrasted to the ending of the show where Clarkson is seen explaining the family tree and the Kilner business through the diagram. This indicates that the journey has occurred and he has learned about his family along the way – he does not refer to the diagram anymore as a roadmap.

The idea of journey’s can also be seen as Clarkson travels through the country to find out about his family history. He travels at first to his mother’s house, then to museums and previous locations of the business. This is contrasted to the description of his relatives where they all are described to be living around the same area. This juxtaposition shows the journey that Clarkson is undertaking as being new and enlightening – an integral and stereotypical aspect of journeys.
